The claim that Babul Supriyo elbowed a girl during the face-off in Jadhavpur university is false. The video footage of the incident confirms that the person in the viral picture is a man and Supriyo was only trying to protect himself.
Babul Supriyo, the Union minister of state for environment, forest and climate change was heckled by a section of the students from left-leaning organizations in Jadavpur University (JU) in West Bengal on September 19.
Supriyo visited the campus to attend an event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
A Facebook user Azder Mirza shared a photo of Babul Supriyo in the group Indian Liberals to claim that union minister elbowed a girl during the face-off with a left-leaning student organisation who protested against the visit by Union minister Babul Supriyo.
CPI(M) leader Md. Salim also shared the same picture on his Twitter thread.
We were able to access the video footage of the incident when this picture was clicked.
From the video, it is clear that the person with a black bag on the back is a boy. Here is one of the frames from the video. We can clearly see his beard.
The man with a black bag can be clearly seen holding Babul Supriyo and pushing him (or pushed by the crowd around them). Babul Supriyo was trying to balance himself and nowhere in the video, he elbowed the man.
Conclusion: The claim that Babul Supriyo elbowed a girl in Jadhavpur university is false. The person in the viral picture is a man who was pushing Babul Supriyo.
The wire in its report has put the blame of Babul Supriyo for the violence. Quoting the report:
Supriyo was attending an event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) – hitherto an absent student body in the history of student politics within the campus – when he was shown black flags and asked to leave by agitating students.
The situation escalated when Supriyo, refusing budge, responded to the agitation with threats of his own. A few hours after the impasse, he was rescued by West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, who is also the chancellor of the university – but not before some associated with the ABVP and the BJP started a fire, vandalised the Arts Faculty Students’ Union, the UG Arts building and a few shops in and around Gate no. 4 of the university.
It's a bit absurd to say that Babul Supriyo should have left the university without attending the seminar when he was asked by the left-leaning organization to do so.
As of now, we couldn't verify the claims made by the wire but it will be wrong to put blame on Babul Supriyo for this violence in the university. He has every right to speak and share his thoughts with students.
